Behind the Scenes of Event Planning: My Summer Internship at Essential Details
My name is Journee Johnson, and I am a senior at the University of Louisville. I will be graduating in December with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and a minor in Hospitality Management. This summer, I had the amazing opportunity to intern with Essential Details, where I gained firsthand experience in the event-planning industry and learned what goes on behind the scenes to bring an event to life.
My time at Essential Details was filled with excitement, creativity, and opportunities to learn. Before this internship, I had an interest in event planning, but I had not experienced all the different elements that contribute to a successful event. Throughout the summer, I gained a better understanding of how much time, organization, and attention to detail go into creating memorable experiences for clients.
One of the most valuable things I learned during my internship at Essential Details was the importance of organizing a timeline for an event. I began to understand how many different details need to be coordinated to ensure that everything comes together smoothly. From managing tasks and keeping track of important details to understanding how different parts of the planning process fit together, I gained a greater appreciation for the organization and preparation required behind the scenes. I learned that a successful event does not happen by chance; it takes thoughtful planning, communication, and attention to detail. This experience helped me recognize how important time management and organization are to becoming a successful event planner.
I also had the opportunity to spend time working at their sister company, Blooms by Essential Details, where I learned a little about floral design and creating flower arrangements. I especially enjoyed this experience because it allowed me to explore the creative side of event planning. Flowers can bring dimension, beauty, and personality to an event, and I appreciated getting a glimpse into the process of arranging them. Although I wish I had been able to learn more about different types of flowers and the specific techniques used to create visually appealing arrangements, I am grateful for the opportunity to have explored this aspect of the industry. It also gave me a greater appreciation for the creativity and skill that floral designers bring to their work.
Of course, not every part of my internship was as exciting as designing stationery or working with flowers. There were times when I had to complete tasks in the warehouse that were not necessarily the most enjoyable. However, these experiences taught me an important lesson about what it takes to run a successful business. Every task, regardless of how exciting or creative it may seem, contributes to the bigger picture. Maintaining an organized warehouse, keeping materials in order, and making sure everything is where it needs to be are all important parts of ensuring that events run smoothly.
This experience helped me recognize that the success of an event begins long before the actual event day. Behind every beautiful celebration is a team of people working together to manage the details, prepare materials, and keep everything organized. I learned that being a good event planner requires flexibility, patience, and a willingness to take on responsibilities that may not always be the most glamorous. These behind-the-scenes tasks are just as important as the creative aspects of the job.
Overall, my internship with Essential Details was an incredibly valuable experience that allowed me to grow both personally and professionally. It gave me a better understanding of the event-planning process and helped me appreciate the balance between creativity and organization that is necessary in this industry. I was able to explore different areas of the business, learn new skills, and gain a clearer picture of the work that goes into creating successful events.
As I prepare to graduate from the University of Louisville, I am excited to continue building on what I learned this summer. One of my long-term goals is to plan my own events, and this internship was an important step toward developing the skills and confidence needed to accomplish that goal. I am especially grateful to everyone at Essential Details who provided me with the opportunity to learn, contribute, and experience the many different aspects of event planning.
This summer reminded me that every detail matters. Whether it is designing an invitation, arranging flowers, or organizing materials in a warehouse, each responsibility plays a role in creating something meaningful for others. I am thankful for the experience and look forward to applying the lessons I learned as I continue my journey in the hospitality and event-planning industry.
